About UR Medicine

The only academic medical center in the region, UR Medicine (University of Rochester) has numerous locations and services. With a focus on education and research, patients benefit from some of the most up-to date treatment options available. There are over 3,000 UR Medicine researchers who are improving treatments for neuroscience, cancer, pediatrics, RNA biology and much more. With so many services on top of all this, patients have a variety of options for their health needs.

UR Medicine’s imaging facilities typically send patient results to their referring physician within a week of the appointment, after the radiologists review them. For quicker access, you can use PocketHealth to easily view and share your results, often before your follow-up appointment.

Most imaging appointments require a physician’s referral for insurance to cover or preauthorize them. However, there are often exceptions for screening mammograms, as long as patients meet the breast cancer screening prerequisite requirements, such as being aged 40 to 74 and having their mammogram every other year. In these cases, many insurances will cover the screenings without a referral. Patients may want to confirm with their insurance providers before scheduling.

Because there are so many UR Medicine facilities, it can be difficult to know which one is closest to you. Here is a UR Medicine location link to their hospitals and other services. You can search by service type or simply enter your city or zip code to find the nearest provider.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a method that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to capture images of a patient’s internal structures and organs. The MRI machine temporarily moves the patient’s protons out of alignment. As the protons realign, the subsequent release of energy is measured by a computer and converted into images. Because MRIs use strong magnets, they are generally not recommended for patients with metallic implants.

CT (computed tomography) scans use multiple low-dose X-rays to produce detailed, cross-sectional images. These images are then combined to create a 3D scan that provides in-depth views of internal tissues and structures, such as bones and organs. CT scans are well-suited for quick imaging, and they don’t require patients to remain still for long periods. They are also a good alternative for patients with metallic implants who may not be suitable candidates for the magnetic properties of MRIs.

Overall, CT scans excel at showing bones and other aspects of the skeletal system, while MRIs provide better details of soft tissues, such as tendons, ligaments and muscles.

You can learn more about the differences between PET, CT and MRI scans here.
